MOSCOW, November 14 (R-Sport) - Konstantin Menshov will replace the injured Evgeny Plushenko at next week's Cup of Russia Grand Prix, the country's figure skating federation announced Thursday.
The 31-year-old Plushenko had been expected to compete in Moscow after skating to victory by more than 40 points at the Volvo Cup in Riga last week, his first competition in nine months after undergoing surgery on a back injury.
But Plushenko, who targets gold at his home Winter Games in February, suffered a knee injury in training on Wednesday and won't be appearing at the November 22-24 Rostelecom Cup.
Menshov, 30, is the 2011 Russian national champion who finished eighth at the last Grand Prix event, the NHK Trophy in Japan last week. International Skating Union rules allow skaters to enter two of the six Grands Prix per season, with those scoring the most points qualifying for the Grand Prix Finals, which this year take place in Japan.
The Rostelecom Cup is the final Grand Prix of the season; this weekend sees the Eric Bompard Trophy in Paris.
