ZAGREB, Croatia, January 24 (R-Sport) - Evgeni Plushenko has withdrawn from the European figure skating championships in Zagreb because of injury after finishing sixth in Thursday's short program, the International Skating Union said.
Plushenko, 30, fell on an early triple axel in a ragged routine that killed his chances of an eighth European title, scoring 74.82 points.
"I should tell you with deep sadness that Evgeny Plushenko has withdrawn from the European championships because of injury. We wish him the quickest of recoveries," ISU sporting director Peter Krick said.
Plushenko's performance was hampered by a back injury that saw him pull out of Wednesday's practice session 10 minutes early.
Florent Amodio of Italy leads with 89.32 points ahead of Saturday's free skate, with Spain's Javier Hernandez half a point behind in second place, and France's Brian Joubert third on 83.93.
