MOSCOW, March 27 (R-Sport) - Mountain cellphone coverage at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics is set to be significantly boosted after a major mobile operator vowed to triple the number of 3G base stations in the area.
The technical director of VimpelCom's Sochi branch said problems experienced by Beeline customers in the mountain village of Krasnaya Polyana would soon be solved.
"The development of the network is ongoing," Alexander Kirichenko said. "In 2013 the number of 3G stations in the mountain cluster will rise threefold," he added.
Beeline is one of the three major Russian operators, along with Megafon and MTS.
The city of Sochi and the coastal Olympic Park will also receive more 3G stations, Kirichenko said. Last year, one-third of the park had no cellular coverage.
The Games start February 7, 2014.
