SOCHI, February 7 (R-Sport) - With a year to go until Sochi hosts the Winter Olympics, the city's unfinished roads are a worry, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday.
Olympic preparations have involved a dramatic overhaul of all transport links, including a road and rail route into the mountains that cost an estimated $6 billion.
Putin suggested he had been told the roads were all finished.
“About the new roads that are apparently all ready, where are they ready then? The roads still need work,” he said.
The chief of the state Olympic construction company Olympstroi, Sergei Gaplikov, said only the main roads were complete.
But Putin went further: “The roads between facilities and to then sports installations themselves, in some places there’s no road. There are some places where only plant and construction vehicles can get through.”
Around 370 kilometers of roads are being built for the Olympics.
