MOSCOW, June 10 (R-Sport) – Traktor Chelyabinsk has made an ambitious contract offer to the Los Angeles Kings' top-scoring defenseman Slava Voynov and is awaiting his decision, the KHL club's general manager told R-Sport on Monday.
Voynov becomes a restricted free agent on July 1, when his contract expires.
The 23-year-old was the Kings' top-scoring defenseman this season with 25 points in the regular season and 13 in the playoffs, and Traktor is hoping the Chelyabinsk native will entertain the idea of a return to his boyhood team.
“All the talk about Voynov was absolutely serious,” Traktor GM Evgeny Tsybuk said. “We made an offer earlier, but he didn’t want to hold talks until the end of the season. We are patiently waiting for his decision. If the deal is sealed, it will be an unreal reality.”
The Russian was picked by the Kings in the first round of the 2008 NHL entry draft, but only graduated to the starting roster after three years in the team’s AHL affiliate the Manchester Monarchs.
Voynov won the Stanley Cup in his first year in the NHL.
He was born and raised in the Ural Mountains city of Chelyabinsk, where he started his career. He played two years with Traktor before departing for North America.
Traktor reached its first Gagarin Cup final last season, losing the series to defending champion Dynamo Moscow in six games.
