MOSCOW, June 21 (R-Sport) – Anzhi Makhachkala has acquired Russian captain Igor Denisov from Zenit St. Petersburg, the Dagestan-based club confirmed on Friday.
According to Zenit, big-spending Anzhi paid €15 million for the 29-year-old midfielder. Denisov had an out-clause in his Zenit contract, on which he had two more years.
Denisov is the first major signing of the summer for Anzhi, where he joins a midfield stocked with highly rated Moroccan Mbark Boussoufa and former Chelsea player Lassana Diarra. Diarra, however, is rumored to be exploring a transfer to AC Monaco.
During his standout career at Zenit, Denisov won three Russian Premier League titles, as well as one Russian Cup and the 2008 UEFA Cup. But he was exiled to the reserves in September during a protracted salary dispute with management, which had just acquired expensive players Hulk and Axel Witsel.
The St. Petersburg native had been at Zenit since 2001, and was the second-longest serving player on the squad after goalkeeper Vyacheslav Malafeev.
Denisov has 37 caps for Russia and has worn the captain's armband since August.
