MOSCOW, December 23 (R-Sport) - Former two-weight world boxing champion Ricardo Mayorga is on course to make a surprise comeback at the age of 40 by fighting Russian prospect Dmitry Chudinov in Moscow, the Russian’s promoter told R-Sport on Monday.
Known for his unpredictable antics both inside and outside the ring, Nicaragua’s Mayorga has not boxed since losing to Miguel Cotto for the WBA light middleweight title in 2011, although he did take part in mixed martial arts matches earlier this year.
“I’m planning to hold a fight in Moscow in April between Mayorga and Chudinov,” the Russian’s promoter Vlad Hrunov said. “We’ve already started negotiations.”
Mayorga was tipped as a possible opponent for Chudinov in May, but that fight never took place.
Chudinov has won five fights and drawn one this year, culminating in a technical knockout of Juan Camilo Novoa on Saturday for the WBA interim world middleweight title. He is 12-0-2 overall.
Mayorga has won 29 fights, lost eight and drawn one.
